Pentel, a combination of "pen" and "tell", was originally the name of a product line. In 1971, however, Japanese Pentel Co., Ltd. adopted it as the company name after the product line became very successful. Pentel was originally founded in 1897, and is today perhaps best known for its mechanical pencils.
